We joined Mystery Doug for a live event discussing questions about space and featuring Jessica Meir, an astronaut who just returned from the International Space Station. (She also graduated from the same school Mrs. Riggs and I attended - UC San Diego.) So cool!
Today, most of the class showed up to our Google Meet with customized masks. This would have been very weird a few months ago but now it's the new normal. Room 18 scholars are looking stylish.
We tried again and today the scholars are recording Flipgrid videos and sharing details about their lives. Good stuff!
Today, we started our journey to deeper Flipgrid proficiency. I reviewed ways to customize videos in order to share details about who we are. Then, the link didn't work. :(.
We'll try again tomorrow. If at first you don't succeed try, try again! We saw a couple bridge designs today, worked on shapes in math, discussed how to properly answer questions and celebrated Chocolate Chip Cookie Day. I'm looking forward to next week!
During the lockdown, we have been celebrating silly holidays. Today, we told chicken jokes, shared our favorite chicken-themed movies, and even did the chicken dance. I did squeeze in a fun math lesson on shapes.
This week our focus for new lessons has been on using Pear Deck to present math concepts. Pear Deck is an add-on for Google Slides that increases student engagement by allowing students to write, type and draw as concepts are introduced. It allows me to see their responses real time and give quick feedback.
So the competition continues. Tomorrow students will show their new and improved bridge designs. So far, the strongest holds 850 coins. Wow!
I wasn't sure what to expect at Grovecenter today. It was nice to see colleagues in person but even more encouraging to see so many students with big smiles, creative posters and very kind words driving by the parking lot. The thank you cards and gifts were a blessing. Some day we will look back at this crazy time and remember all the new tools we used for distance learning. However, it will never be a complete substitute for learning in-person together. What a great day! Today, we started a Mystery Science bridge building lesson (distance learning style). We watched the video during our daily Google Meet, discussed designs in the chat, created prototypes and started building bridges out of paper. Students are inserting pictures of their bridges into a Google Slides presentation and retooling/retesting designs. So far, Mia was able to build a bridge, made with only two pieces of paper, that can hold over 700 pennies! The competition continues next week. My little engineering scholars are amazing!
Students are learning how to use Google Slides as we prepare for Mother's Day. We brainstormed first and created these maps.
Once again we studied a holiday using History.com. We learned that it's not a major holiday in Mexico and does not commemorate Mexican independence. Check out the video to learn more!
During today's Google Meet we celebrated all things "Star Wars" and drew Baby Yodas together. Mando would be proud!
